Article: Work on the 'third track' (Emmerich - Oberhausen)

In the period from Friday, November 1 (9 p.m.) to Sunday, November 24, 2024 (11:59 p.m.), extensive work will take place on the Emmerich - Oberhausen route. During this period, the section between Oberhausen and Zevenaar will be closed to all train traffic. The work is part of the construction of the so-called "third track" in Germany. Train traffic to and from Germany will use other border crossings during this period. Departure and arrival times may change as a result.

Third track Germany

A good infrastructure for rail freight transport is important for the economic development of the Netherlands. The number of trains using the Betuweroute has grown in recent years and is expected to increase further. For example through the new terminals on Maasvlakte 2. In order to manage the expected increase in the right direction, more capacity is needed at the border in Zevenaar and in Germany. The construction of the third track will enable railway undertakings to deploy more freight trains in the future on the European freight transport corridors, such as between Rotterdam and Genoa.
