Article: Hot water pipes
From the end of April, DB Cargo will be transporting special pipes from Austria to Moerdijk twice a week for a year and a half. The pipes are intended for district heating.
At the end of 2021, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate and Gasunie decided to lay a heat pipeline from the port of Rotterdam to The Hague. With the construction of the underground pipeline, residual heat from companies in the port will become available for a maximum of 120,000 homes and other buildings in The Hague and the province of South Holland. This results in a CO2 reduction of about 0.18 megatons per year. By using this residual heat for heating buildings and greenhouse horticulture, less heat has to be produced with natural gas.
The pipes that DB Cargo will transport are suitable for the transport of hot water and will be placed 4 to 5 meters underground on the north side of the Maas over a 70 km stretch. DB Cargo runs a group of wagons every Monday and Wednesday, with a total of 10 wagons.
DB Cargo uses the Sns wagon type for transport. These wagons have a useful loading length of over 19 meters and are ideal for the transport of pipes. And, like all DB Cargo's own wagons, equipped with whisper brakes.
