PZEM and Shell become new suppliers for sustainable energy trains for 3 years

(Utrecht, 25.07.2023) Deutsche Bahn (DB) has set itself the ambitious goal of climate neutrality by 2040. As part of the DB group, DB Cargo Netherlands is actively involved in meeting the environmental targets. DB Cargo Netherlands is the first rail transport company in the Netherlands to use the climate-friendly biofuel HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oils) in one of its diesel locomotives. Compared to conventional diesel, the biofuel reduces CO2e emissions by around 90% over the entire life cycle. In a six-month trial, the regenerative fuel is currently tested under real operating conditions on the railway lines to Eemshaven, Delfzijl and Veendam. The trial aims to ensure that the motor performance remains unaffected and to confirm the positive effects of HVO as an alternative to conventional fossil diesel.

(Venlo, 10 July 2023) The go-ahead was recently given for a trial to transport residual waste by rail instead of road. A total of 500 tonnes of residual waste will be transported in bales by train. The aim of the pilot is to investigate whether it is possible to transport waste more efficiently via train transport instead of road transport. The cooperating parties are recycler Renewi, DB Cargo Netherlands, Cabooter Venlo, AEB Amsterdam, Topsector Logistiek. Every week, Renewi transports 1,300 tonnes of residual waste by road from Limburg. This is about 59 transport movements. During the pilot, the technical feasibility of baling the waste, without shredding, and then placing these bales in a train wagon, will be investigated. The Chemelot fire brigade recently took part in an instruction provided by our colleague Wiel Vrolings on the use of rail tank cars for the transport of hazardous substances. Due to all the restrictions as a result of the corona pandemic, it was the first time in a long time that Vrolings was able to provide practical instruction again.

From the end of April, DB Cargo will be transporting special pipes from Austria to Moerdijk twice a week for a year and a half. The pipes are intended for district heating. DB Cargo and DB Schenker are linking up with the 'railway land bridge' that Deutsche Bahn opened between Germany and the Ukraine last week. This network can be used by companies and large sponsors to send large quantities of freight to Ukraine. For donations of relief goods, the transport is free. There is currently still capacity in this logistics network to bring relief goods to Ukraine.

In the period from Friday, November 1 (9 p.m.) to Sunday, November 24, 2024 (11:59 p.m.), extensive work will take place on the Emmerich - Oberhausen route.

On July 15, 2024, DB Cargo will start the automatic sorting process on the completely renewed track bundles 4, 5 and 6 of Kijfhoek. This is possible because the renewal work, including the installation of a new, computer-controlled sorting installation, has recently been successfully completed. During this same period, DB Cargo's hump locomotives were fitted with new on-board equipment for communication with ProRail's new shore-based installation.

In the period from May 14 to June 14, 2024, extensive work will take place between Emmerich and Oberhausen.

On 2 April 2024, the trial operation of the recently renovated hump installation at Kijfhoek will start.

System integration tests of the revamped hill system were due to start on 19 February. However, the system installation and static acceptance tests are behind schedule.

The complete renewal of the Kijfhoek sorting yard is progressing steadily and is currently on schedule.

On Friday 15 September, a construction pit - made for renewing the automatic hill system - flooded. When the water was pumped away, it entered the cellars, where the electric motors of the evacuation and back-up system are located. These 126 electric motors were damaged.

During the period from 19 August to 29 September, and from 24 November to 8 December 2023, extensive work will take place on the Emmerich - Oberhausen section. The work consists of a total closure of the track section, alternating with train traffic on one track. The work is part of the construction of the so-called 'third track' in Germany. During this period, train traffic to and from Germany partly uses other border crossings. Departure and arrival times may change as a result.
